UD graduates of the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture work in cultural and historic sites across the country, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Colonial Williamsburg.
Three of these graduates serve in vital positions at the Museum of the American Revolution, built in 2017 to commemorate this period in the nation's history: senior manager of galler interpretation, Tyler Putman, AS11M, 14M, 20PhD; assistant curator of exhibition, Matthew Skic, AS16M; and manager of special programs, Hannah Boettcher, AS16M.
Other program graduates have worked on projects including preservation of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Emancipation Proclomation and Lady Liberty's torch, including Virginia Whelan, AS97M, and Joanna Hurd, AS20M, who were part of the team that worked on George Washington's war tent.
“What conservators do is save a view of the past,” says Whelan.
“We preserve because objects carry meaning and feeling,” adds Hurd. “They connect us to memories we don’t have.”
